Please remove all lights, ornaments and decorations from your Christmas Tree and place the tree at the curb. We will collect the tree as part of your regular garbage pickup. We may run behind picking up the trees the week after Christmas when so many trees are placed at the curb. Thank you for your patience.
Matthews Town Hall will be closed Monday, December 26 and Tuesday, December 27. Town Hall will reopen on Wednesday, December 28.

Mecklenburg County government offices and agencies will be closed on Monday, December 26 and Tuesday, December 27, 2011 for the Christmas holiday and on Monday, January 2, 2012 for the New Year’s holiday.
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission recently partnered with the Matthews Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resource Department to construct a new handicapped-accessible fishing pier at Squirrel Lake Park.
Renovations to Squirrel Lake Park have been completed and the park is now open. The park facelift included the addition of a restroom facility, new playground equipment and swing structures for children aged 2-12, improvements and additional spaces to the parking lot. Also included in the project is an asphalt connector trail that will run from Pleasant Plains Road through the park to Four Mile Creek Greenway, a handicap accessible fishing pier, a new shelter near the pond and improvements to existing trails in the park.

The Matthews Police Department is pleased to announce the Citizen Police Academy for 2012. The academy is a nine week program that is designed to build a stronger relationship between the community and the police department through education. It is open to residents and individuals who work in the town of Matthews.
The Town of Matthews has received a top award from the N.C. Association of Government Information Officers. Annette Privette Keller, the Town’s Communication Director, received first place in the Excellence in Communications Campaign/Media Kits Category for the “Biweekly Recycling Implementation Plan”.
House Speaker Thom Tillis (R-Mecklenburg) will hold a town hall meeting in Matthews on Monday, December 5th, at Central Piedmont Community College at 5:00 p.m. He will be joined by Rep. Bill Brawley (R-Mecklenburg) and other area legislators. Speaker Tillis will make comments and take questions from the public. The public is encouraged to attend.
Reno, one of the K-9 dogs with the Matthews Police Department, has retired after serving the department for seven years.
