A new garbage/recycling collection schedule for the Town of Matthews will begin September 13, 2010. Approximately 26% or 2,400 households and businesses will have a change in their schedule. There are a total of nearly 9,000 garbage collection points in Matthews.
The schedules are changing because of the Town’s growth over the years. The routes are being modified in order to more efficiently balance the number of stops made daily. Currently, garbage/recycling is picked up four days a week in Matthews. With the new routes, garbage/recycling will now be picked up five days each week in Matthews.
This new schedule will primarily affect the Monday and Tuesday routes by splitting them and adding a Wednesday collection day. This new Wednesday collection will also help many downtown businesses who have to put carts out on Friday or Sunday night for their Monday pickup. Existing Thursday and Friday routes will see only small adjustments.
Only those customers whose route will change will receive a letter from the Town informing them of their new collection day by the end of August. Additional reminders will be attached to garbage containers the two weeks before the change.
Garbage, recycling and yard waste collection criteria will remain unchanged. If you have any questions, please contact the Matthews Public Works Department at 704-847-3640 or visit www.matthewsnc.com.
