It's America's Night Out Against Crime! The 27th Annual National Night Out (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event will be celebrated Tuesday, August 3. Four neighborhoods in Matthews are participating in the event this year: The Village at St. Andrews, Hampton Green, Windrow, and Elizabeth Place. Hampton Green, Windrow, and Elizabeth Place will celebrate from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 3. The Village at St. Andrews will celebrate on Monday, August 2 from 6-8 p.m.
Officers with the Matthews Police Department will be at each event, meeting residents, distributing crime prevention materials and items for children. Raffle for prizes and K-9 demonstrations are also activities planned during the National Night Out activities.

“We invite all residents, even those not in neighborhoods with organized events, to use this opportunity to get out and visit your neighbors. We also appreciate those that have supported this program through donations and contributions,” said Officer Stason Tyrrell, Community Resource Officer for the Matthews Police Department.
National Night Out is designed to:
• Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
• Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
• Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
The National Night Out campaign involves citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 36 million people participated in National Night Out 2009.
