Water-Sewer Rate Study Seeking Your Input
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities customers are urged to attend upcoming
information and public input sessions related to the first comprehensive review of
water/sewer rates and fees since 1977.
“We’re taking a fresh look at rates and fees charged for the essential water and sewer services we deliver, to see if there are better alternatives,” said Barry Gullet, Charlotte- Mecklenburg Utilities Director. “We need to hear from customers.” As a public service, Gullet emphasized the utility’s goal is “to recommend a rate structure that is considered fair and equitable, while generating the revenues required to operate the water and sewer system.”
Two sets of five public meetings are scheduled across Mecklenburg County. The first series, which starts next week, will include presenting information and gathering input related to the existing water and sewer rate structure. The second series begins in late October/early November and will introduce potential rate & fee alternatives for public feedback.
Customers are encouraged to attend both meetings in their area. The first meeting will include sharing introductory background about rates and fees and soliciting public input. The second set of meetings will include presenting alternative rate and fee structures for public comment.
Questions to Consider:
1. What criteria is most important for Utilities to consider when evaluating existing and alternative rate
structures?
2. How should the utility allocate the cost to customers for building water system capacity to meet
summertime peak water demands?
3. How should the cost of constructing facilities to serve new customers be paid for under the rate
structure?
4. What costs should be recovered from the monthly fixed service charge vs. the usage rate?
5. How should Utilities address water and sewer rate affordability in its rate structure?
6. What issues, concerns, suggestions do you have pertaining to the existing rate structure?
