OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

Charlotte, NC – October is recognized nationally as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. One way to raise awareness is by holding events in memory of those who have lost their lives at the hands of their abusers. It is also a time to celebrate all survivors of intimate partner violence.

Local events include free training sessions and a candlelight vigil. The schedule of events is online at DV Awareness Month Calendar of Events and is listed below.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month began in 1981 with the National Coalition Against Violence Day of Unity. The intent was to bring together battered women's advocates from across the country who were dedicated to ending violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became a special week when a range of activities were held at the local, state and national levels.
