The Matthews Police Department has teamed up with the Matthews-Mint Hill Optimist Club, working in conjunction with Matthews Elementary School, to bring an Internet safety program to all 3rd and 4th graders at the school.

Studies show 54% of kids have private conversations with online strangers through Instant Messaging, 30% of kids have talked with a cyber-stranger about meeting in person, 27% have talked with an online stranger about sex and 16% have discovered that someone online was an adult pretending to be much younger.

The program is presented in two parts. The first will be an educational seminar offered for parents and caregivers. The information provided will include ways to safeguard children from inappropriate contacts and behaviors that they may encounter online with methods of monitoring and filtering. The seminar will be held at the Matthews Community Center tomorrow, Tuesday, November 16 at 6:30 pm. The second part will be an assembly for all 3rd and 4th grade students at the school.
