The Matthews Police Department is pleased to announce the Citizen Police Academy for 2011. The Academy is a nine week program designed to build a stronger relationship between the community and the police department through education. The program is open to residents and individuals who work in Matthews. The Citizen Police Academy is not designed to train attendees about how to be police officers. The intent is to create a hands-on interactive program that will assist in strengthening the partnership between the Matthews Police Department and the community it serves. Information provided throughout the program is also intended to help with misunderstandings about law enforcement and create an awareness of challenges and limitations that police officers face daily. Participants will meet on Thursdays, from February 10 - April 7, at the Matthews Police Department located at 1201 Crews Road. Classes are from 6 -8 p.m. You will also have the option to arrange a four hour ride-a-long with an on-duty patrol officer. This program is offered at no cost to the public. There are several eligibility requirements in order to participate: • You must be 18 years of age or older • Live or work within the Town of Matthews • Must not have been convicted of, or have any pending charges for, any felony, or serious misdemeanor within the last 5 years • Allow a criminal background check and personal references to be contacted
