STREET INFORMATION - Public Work staff members with the Town of Matthews have been working around the clock since Sunday to keep Town streets passable.
“We are experiencing very unusual winter weather and are working as hard as we can to clear major roadways, heavily traveled connector streets,” said Matthews Town Manager Hazen Blodgett. “Crews have been working around the clock since the storm began early Monday morning to clear these streets. At this point we do believe that we have the major roadways and connectors clear but we do expect wet streets to potentially refreeze tonight. People should be careful traveling tonight and tomorrow.”
The Town has 98 miles of roadway within its Town limits. Usually during inclement weather the Town brines, salts and plows state roadways and connector streets. Neighborhood streets are not cleared due to the fact that the weather generally cooperates and melts these streets by the time Town crews get major streets passable. Additionally, the Town’s plows and trucks are too big to drive safely into neighborhoods.
Tomorrow, Town officials will evaluate neighborhoods that have lots of hills, where ice and snow may still be in significant amounts, to determine if crews can begin work safely to assist in making these neighborhoods passable.
“We hope that people will be patient as we all work to safely clear streets in these extreme weather conditions,” continued Blodgett.
Under normal winter circumstances the Town generally uses less than 50 tons of salt. At this point the Town has almost used up all of its salt. The Town has ordered more in order to be ready for any more winter weather. The Town has had two crews of six people who are working in shifts around the clock on the roadways.
