This week the Town of Matthews Public Works Landscape Division will begin planting new trees along N. Trade Street. The River Birch trees, which are now along the street, will be replaced with Lacy Bark Elm trees.
The River Birch trees will be relocated to the new Four Mile Creek Greenway. They were planted temporarily this summer along N. Trade Street as improvements were made to the roadway. “Our plan was to use the River Birch trees as a temporary landscaping element, until we could plant trees more suited for a street environment this winter,” said Ralph Ramsaur, Town of Matthews Landscape Manager. "Winter is the best time for tree planting,” he added
The elm trees are better suited for the N. Trade Street corridor due to their ability to withstand heat and their drought tolerance. Crews will begin this week to remove the river birch trees, condition the soil in the planting areas and plant the elm trees. Several of the other existing trees may be left in place for another year, along with the new elm trees, as the crews work to establish these permanent landscape elements.
The work will involve blocking some parking spaces along Trade Street temporarily.
