Headline: Matthews Branch Library Volunteer of the Year Event

It has been said previously by the American Library Association that "Libraries Build Community" and nowhere was that more evident than at the Matthews Branch Library on Sunday, January 17 as they hosted a "Winter Festival" to honor their volunteers. The Town of Matthews was well represented by the Mayor Jim Taylor, Mayor Pro-Tem Suzanne Gulley (who is also a volunteer @ MS), Town Commissioner John Urban and Town Manager Hazen Blodgett. The Mayor reiterated his appreciation for the residents donating their time to support a cherished community institution and told the volunteers to look forward to the summer time when he would again be donning his chef hat to grill them some hamburgers.

Branch Manager Laura Highfill, Volunteer Point Person(s) Nancy Granzen, Helen Siroky and Chris Morgan and Volunteer Coordinator Chauna Wall took turns thanking the volunteers for their service. This year, the Matthews Branch instituted a Volunteer of the Year Award in honor of their long-time volunteer Mr. Ed Maag, who died this past December. His widow Mary Lee Maag, her daughter, son-in-law and grandson were present for the event. Mrs. Maag’s deceased husband volunteered for over 20 years and proudly brought out-of-town visitors to the library to showcase the branch. In the inaugural awarding of this honor, long-time volunteers LuLu Moller and Claudia Mady (retired staff member) received an engraved glass star as 2010 recipients of the Volunteer of the Year Award. Both Ms. Moller and Ms. Mady are exceptionally dedicated to the Matthews Library branch, Ms. Moller volunteering for 2.5 years and Ms. Mady for 3.5 years. They are willing to help in any way possible for as many days or hours needed.

The Matthews business community donated food and gift certificates for door prizes for the event.
