Every two years the Town of Matthews conducts a Citizens Survey. The survey gauges people’s feedback on the variety of services the town provides to its citizens. This includes police service, fire & ems service, garbage collection, recycling collection, parks and recreation programs and much more.

The survey was conducted in the fall of 2010 by Dr. Paul Friday, a professor at UNCC. The survey results are statistically valid and are used by the Town Board and staff when prioritizing budget needs and achieving the goals of the Town.

The survey results show that generally people in Matthews are positive about the Town of Matthews and its management. Outlined below are bullets of information gleaned from the survey.

• 50% have contacted the Town with questions or issues in the past year. 25% of the respondents used email to contact Town staff. 94% feel the assistance they received was prompt and professional – this is up from 87% in 2008.

• 96% feel that Matthews is a good place to live. This is also up from 2006 & 2008.

• 89% feel that Matthews is safe and 92% feel safe walking in the downtown area.
• 83% visit downtown Matthews to shop, eat or recreate.
• 88% are satisfied with the overall appearance of the Town.
• 77% feel Town Employees do their jobs in a professional manner.
• 82% are satisfied with the police service and 80% are satisfied with the Fire & EMS service.
• 84% are satisfied with recycling.
• 63% would like to have a rollout recycling cart and 60% would support going to a biweekly recycling schedule with the rollout cart.
• 90% rate the garbage collection service as good or excellent
• 84% rate yard waste collection as good or excellent
• The condition of Town roads was rated as better than State Roads
• 94% have visited a Town park or recreation center which is up from 2008.
• The most frequently mentioned amenity needed in parks was having or improving restrooms.
• Second most frequently mentioned amenity needed in parks was walking, jogging and bicycle pathways.
• 78% say an email newsletter is the best way to communicate with them.
• 2/3 indicate that the Town Website is a good means to communicate information.
• One-fourth say they use social media.
• 79% have used the Town’s website with 89% saying it is easy to navigate.
