The Town of Matthews Fire & EMS Department has received a $54,270 Assistance to Firefighters Federal Grant. The grant will be used to replace a set of hydraulic rescue tools on one of the department’s fire trucks. The grant will be met with a 10% match ($6,030) from the Town.
The hydraulic rescue tools are used to extricate people from vehicles involved in accidents. In 2009 the Fire & EMS Department responded to over 160 car accidents.
“We appreciate these grant monies from AFG. The equipment that we use every day is very expensive and wears out over time due to the number of calls we respond to and it was time for us to replace these. We are glad AFG recognized our need and awarded us the funds,” said Interim Matthews Fire & EMS Chief Dennis Green. “We are also grateful for the support we received from U.S. Representative Sue Myrick who lent her support to our grant application.”
Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) provides financial assistance directly to fire departments and nonaffiliated EMS organizations to help them meet their firefighting and emergency response needs.
