The Town of Matthews and NCDOT have received $526,027 from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Transportation, Community and System Preservation Program (TCSP) grant program.

The money will be used to install a roundabout at the intersection of Matthews-Mint Hill Road and NC-51. Based on a recent NCDOT study the roundabout will improve traffic capacity and alleviate safety issues for both motorists and pedestrians in this heavily traveled area. This intersection is located in close proximity to Butler High School, with approximately 2,400 students and faculty and is used by over 18,000 commuters traveling to and from destinations in the Charlotte metro area.

“We would like to thank Senator Kay Hagan, Senator Richard Burr and Congresswoman Sue Myrick for helping us receive these funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Without the grant we would not have been able to construct this roundabout,” commented Mayor Jim Taylor.

The Town of Matthews and NCDOT will work together on this project and planning for the project is underway and more details including a timetable for construction will be announced at a later date.

The project is expected to cost approximately $754,269. The Town and NCDOT will contribute 20% to the costs of the roundabout.
