The Town of Matthews Police Department welcomes four officers to its patrol division: Scott Barnette, Tyler Klemas, Sean Mears, and Juan Velez.

Scott Barnette is a graduate of South Piedmont Community College where he earned his basic law enforcement training. He received recognition for his top scores at the college. He served five years in the U.S. Army where he received military police training and saw combat action. He and his wife, Robien, have three children.

Tyler Klemas served in the U.S. Marine Corps for seven years. His military service included the Presidential Security Detail assigned to Camp David and the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C., and serving in Afghanistan and Iraq where he was chosen to be on the Personal Security Detail for the Commander of Multi-National Forces. He received his basic law enforcement training from Central Piedmont Community College.

A native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Sean Mears served in the U.S Marine Corps for nine years. He was a Primary Marksmanship Instructor at Camp Pendleton, California. He has also worked in healthcare security at several major medical facilities including the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Presbyterian Hospital Main. Sean worked as a dispatcher for the Matthews Police Department while completing his basic law enforcement training at South Piedmont Community College. He and his wife, Jill, have a daughter.

Juan Velez is also a graduate of South Piedmont Community College. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a police officer. He has experience working for the N.C. Child Enforcement Division. He and his wife, Dorothy, have two children.
