Police Captain Carla Thompson has retired from the Matthews Police Department after serving for 23 years with the Town. Carla joined the department as a patrol officer in 1988. Over the years she has moved up the ranks in the department serving as a detective, sergeant, captain of criminal investigations and captain of patrol – the position she held at retirement.
During her career with Matthews Carla has been honored with many awards and commendations including the Officer of the Year Award in 1994 and 1995 and commendations in 1995, 1996 and two in 1997. Numerous times she has been recognized for her care and concern for the people living in Matthews who have experienced unfortunate circumstances and have needed police assistance. People have even complimented her on the way she gave out speeding tickets.
Carla was honored for her years of service to the Town at Monday’s Town Board meeting by the Mayor and Commissioners. “I cannot adequately express my appreciation and gratitude for the opportunity to have served one of the best communities for so many years and to have worked with some of the finest and most dedicated police officers I have ever observed. Again, thank you for the chance to have been a part of an exceptional team and police department,” Carla said.
Over the years she has been active in many non-profit organizations and served as a Basic Law Enforcement Training Instructor. She has a Bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a Master's degree in Criminal Justice from Andrew Jackson University. She is a graduate of the Southeastern Command and Leadership Academy (formerly the Tennessee Command and Leadership Academy) and a graduate of the Law Enforcement Executive Program at North Carolina State University.
Carla has no plans to slow down now that she has retired. She has joined the Davidson College Public Safety and Police Department as a Deputy Chief.
