Over 200 volunteers from Caramel Baptist Church completed projects around the Town of Matthews Saturday, November 5. The church also made a contribution to the Town to fund the service projects they completed. Called “Matthews Matters” - this was the second time the church teamed up with the Town to work on beautification projects – the first was in 2009.
“Thank you to Caramel Baptist Church and all of the church members who gave their time and talents to make Matthews more beautiful. This is a great partnership with the Town and the church and we appreciate all of their hard work,” commented Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor, who met with volunteers as they ate breakfast before beginning their work on Saturday.
Church members young and old worked all day on Saturday at various locations around Matthews including the Community Garden, Matthews Community Center, and Four Mile Creek Greenway.
The volunteers extended the community garden area, replaced fencing, installed topsoil and compost, and extended the walking trail. At the Matthews Community Center they mulched, trimmed trees, sanded and refinished the front doors of the center.
At the Four Mile Creek Greenway the volunteers removed debris along the trail, boardwalk and bridges, trimmed trees, planted trees and shrubs, and did other cleanup tasks such as removing leaves from the greenway.
