Reno, one of the K-9 dogs with the Matthews Police Department, has retired after serving the department for seven years. Reno had begun having problems getting in and out of vehicles and his ability to chase suspects was affected as his stamina and energy decreased with age. Reno, is a Belgian Malinois, who joined the department when he was approximately two years old. He was born in Holland and his commands are given in Dutch by his partner, Officer Kevin Osuch.

Reno and Kevin have over 1,000 hours of training as a team. Reno is considered a dual purpose K-9 which means he is trained for narcotics odor detection and patrol work, including tracking, building searches, evidence searches, criminal apprehensions and handler protection. Reno has also assisted other local, state and federal agencies and been the main attraction at hundreds of community events in the area.

“During his career with the Matthews Police Department Reno has assisted with the capture of 10 suspects, located several guns and various other evidence items. He has also helped locate several hundred thousands of dollars in suspected drug money and narcotics,” said Kevin. “Reno has been fearless and a tremendous asset to our department.” Reno will spend his retirement with Kevin, his wife, and his two children while chasing the occasional squirrel.

Castor, a two and half year old Belgian Malinois, will be Kevin’s new K-9 dog. Castor is completely trained as well and began work this week with the Police Department.
