The Town of Matthews has purchased 9.13 acres of property on Rice Road for a new neighborhood park. The property was purchased for $338,000 from the Wake County Board of Education. The Town will apply for a state grant which could potentially pay for one-half of the cost of the land.

“In our Park Master Plan we have identified areas of the Town where parks are needed and the Rice Road area is one of the targeted locations where we would like to have this amenity for our residents,” said Matthews Town Manager Hazen Blodgett. “Currently, we have no park and recreational facilities in this part of Town and with this land available at an affordable price we decided this purchase is in the best interest of our citizens.”

The land had previously been valued at approximately $500,000 but with the recession recent appraisals valued the property at between $335,000 and $341,000.

“The sale of the property will allow Wake County Schools to complete projects they have on their books and this gives us a great opportunity to have a park in a much needed location in Matthews,” Blodgett continued.

The Town has also purchased an additional parcel of land at 2432 Rice Road. It will be combined with the other Rice Road property for the neighborhood park. This parcel was purchased at the appraised value of $25,500.

No timeline for construction of the park has been determined at this point.
