Salem Services Group, a restoration contractor, is back in business.
Salem was purchased in 2009 by Structural Preservation Systems from Gary Moore. The plan was to expand operations throughout the Southeast, with Gary’s sons, Mike and Matt, as part of the firm, over the next 10 years. Gary had founded Salem in 1995 and the firm had built a solid reputation completing commercial and historical restoration projects primarily in North and South Carolina.
Structural, known for their work in heavy concrete repair and strengthening, quickly grew this newly acquired branch from 75 employees to 180. Then the recession began and restoration projects slowed. In October 2011 Structural found themselves in the position of having to lay off employees and curtailing their operations.
Gary Moore and his sons, Mike and Matt, did not want to see the company they had worked to build over the years close. “We made a family decision to buy the company back from Structural and for us to return to work doing what we love to do – restoration work,” said Gary Moore. “We did not want to see anyone lose their jobs. We are a family business and our family values have always been reflected in our business philosophy.
Mike and Matt are now co-owners with their dad and are busy working on projects. “There were a backlog of winter projects that Structural could not complete before closing down and they graciously assigned the contracts over to us for completion. We now have 40 employees and are aiming to hire about 15 more by this Spring”, commented Mike Moore, who is serving as General Manager of Salem.
“We want people to know we are back in business and still headquartered here in Matthews. Over the years we have built long term relationships with customers and they are bringing their business back to us,” said Matt Moore, Operations Manager.
“We are excited that the Moore family has returned to ownership of the company and has resumed its restoration business. We are happy to see they are adding jobs in this industry and in Matthews and we look forward to continuing to work with Salem,” said Matthews Assistant Manager Jamie Justice.
Projects that Salem has completed over the years include restoration work on a number of historical buildings in Charleston, SC including the Market, Charleston City Hall, Randolph Hall and locally Gaston Memorial Hospital, Carolinas Medical Center, The Stone Building on UNCG’s Campus and many more.
