Courtney Pruitt and Travis Ernsberger have completed the Fire Academy at Cleveland Community College where they earned Firefighter I and II certification. The academy involved residing at area fire stations for two months of extensive training. Pruitt and Ernsberger are volunteer firefighters with the Town of Matthews Fire & EMS Department.
 
Pruitt is a native of Matthews. Ernsberger is a native of Ohio. Both joined the department a year ago and hope to pursue careers in firefighting and EMS. Ernsberger is also a graduate of the Rowan Cabarrus Community College EMT program and will enroll at CPCC to earn an associate degree. Pruitt will begin the CPCC’s EMT program this year.
 
The Town of Matthews Fire & EMS Department has paid staff firefighters who work the day shift. The department relies on volunteers to cover night and weekend shifts. Volunteers who meet participation requirements receive monetary compensation.
