Nine 4th and 5th graders from the three elementary schools in Matthews are winners of the “Silence the Violence” poster competition. Since the 1990s students have participated in this program sponsored by the Matthews Police Department. The program is designed to make students think of ways to combat crime and violence in their schools and the community. All 4th and 5th grade students from Crown Point, Elizabeth Lane and Matthews Elementary Schools are asked to create posters demonstrating their ideas. Three winners from each school are selected to spend the day visiting all town departments, enjoying lunch with town staff and are honored by the Mayor and Town Board with a plaque.
