Matthews dedicated its newest park on Thursday, May 13. KP Park is located adjacent to Town Hall on Matthews Mint Hill Road. The pocket park features benches, a pergola, beautiful flowers and trees. It is an ideal place to have lunch, read a book or just enjoy the outdoors.

This park is special for many reasons. This is the Town’s first pocket park. It will feature the Town’s first piece of public art which will be circled with engraved bricks purchased by members of the community who wanted to contribute financially to the park.

KP Park is named in memory of former Matthews Assistant Town Manager Kay Plyler who died tragically in 2008. Construction of the park was done by Town employees and civic organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, and the Matthews Civitan Club. HAWK (Habitat and Wildlife Keepers) donated a bird feeder and a birdhouse for the park.

“We were able to save thousands of dollars in labor costs because we have so many caring employees and people in our community. The park is a focal point for our downtown area and immediately welcomes you to stop and enjoy our Town,” said Matthews Town Manager Hazen Blodgett.

During the ceremony Kay Plyler’s family unveiled the sculpture completed by artist Tom Risser. Risser donated his time and talents to the project with the only costs being the materials for the sculpture.
