The Matthews Alive Board of Directors has announced their annual Call for Artists for what will become the official art piece for the Matthews Alive Festival in 2010. The selected artwork will adorn the festival’s posters, t-shirts, event guides, and will even serve as the cover for the festival’s special promotional section.
The Matthews Alive! Festival, in its 18th year, is a 4 day family festival which takes place every year over Labor Day weekend. The festival is made up of four live music stages, a large arts and crafts area made up of over 150 regional artisans, a Family Fun Zone made up of rides, games and amusements, a Kid’s Connection with pony and train rides, a wide array of food vendors, the Southeast’s Largest Labor Day Parade, and much more! The festival attracts more than 150,000 attendees each year and continues to grow. You can learn more at www.matthewsalive.org.
Along with the announcement of the call for artists also comes the unveiling of this year’s festival theme, “Volunteer Matthews”. “Even in the festival’s 18th year”, said Jayson Johnston, Executive Director, “most people still do not realize that the overall mission of the Matthews Alive Festival is to give back to the local community by way of supporting those non-profit groups from around our area that volunteer at Matthews Alive.” Through these volunteer efforts these groups support the festival and allow for its continued success in the Matthews community. This mutual support creates a unique partnership between the festival and each of its non-profits. It is the Matthews Alive Board’s goal in 2010 for
the art piece to not only showcase the fun filled spirit of Matthews Alive, but also the spirit of giving back to the local community. Over the past 18 years the Matthews Alive Festival has contributed over $750,000 back into the Matthews non-profit community.
“Volunteerism is so vital in our community not only for the continued success of the festival, but also for the overall success and wholeness of our wonderful Town of Matthews”, says Jim Sander, Board Chair of Matthews Alive.
All local and regional artists are invited to participate in this call for artists and submit beginning immediately. The deadline for submissions will be Wednesday, June 16th at 3:00 PM.
