Renovations to Squirrel Lake Park have been completed and the park is now open. The park facelift included the addition of a restroom facility, new playground equipment and swing structures for children aged 2-12, improvements and additional spaces to the parking lot. Also included in the project is an asphalt connector trail that will run from Pleasant Plains Road through the park to Four Mile Creek Greenway, a handicap accessible fishing pier, a new shelter near the pond and improvements to existing trails in the park.

The Mecklenburg Soil and Water Conservation District will be holding its 40th annual Tree Seedling Sale on Saturday, Jan. 22, from 9 a.m. – noon at the Hal Marshall County Services Center, 700 N. Tryon St. in Charlotte. A special “early bird” presale will be held on Friday, Jan. 21 in the same location from noon-2 p.m., with a limited number of plants available. Four Mile Creek Greenway, is nearing completion. The greenway is a $1.6M joint project between the Town of Matthews and Mecklenburg County. Trail A, which goes from East John St. to Brenham Lane, is complete. Trail B, which goes from S. A willow oak tree at Matthews Elementary School has been designated as the first Living Legacy Tree in Matthews. The tree is considered to be 80-100 years old. The Living Legacy Trees are trees with specific structural, species, historical or aesthetic characteristics that make them unique specimens and of value to the community.

Town Public Works crews have been busy placing brine on town roadways today- Sunday, January 9. Overnight they will monitor the weather and once snow fall accumulates they will begin plowing the snow. If ice becomes a likelihood salt will be placed on bridges.

If there is significant snowfall crews will plow major roadways first and then secondary roads.

NCDOT is also working to ensure major interstates and highways in the area are prepped for the expected winter mix.

We do ask that if you can stay off the roadways please do so once winter weather occurs.

Renovations to Squirrel Lake Park have begun. The park facelift includes the addition of a restroom facility, new playground equipment and swing structures for children aged 2-12, improvements and additional spaces to the parking lot. Also included in the project is an asphalt connector trail that will run from Pleasant Plains Road through the park to Four Mile Creek Greenway, a handicap accessible fishing pier, a new shelter near the pond and improvements to existing trails in the park.

Wingate University has announced plans to build a $5 million educational center at Wingate Commons in Matthews to serve adult students in the metro Charlotte area. The center will open in 2013 on an eight-acre site near I-485 Exit 52 at John Street. It will feature a three-story classic brick and column building totaling 36,000 square feet. Initially, the center will house 12 large classrooms, a learning center and offices on the first two floors with room for additional classrooms on the third floor as needed.

The power has been restored. Tree limbs fell and caused a transformer to short out causing the outage. It took some time to find the location of the outage and repair it. While assisting with the outage emergency management personnel discovered a small gas leak at the intersection of Sardis Plantation Drive and NC 51. This has been repaired.

These volunteers work at the festival for two reasons – they love Matthews and the non-profits they represent will share in the profits of the festival. Applications are currently being screened and interviews scheduled with prospective volunteers. Construction continues for the Four Mile Creek Greenway. The contractor continues boardwalk construction, stone sub-base placement, and the installation of several small swale bridges. Asphalt paving should begin within the next two weeks. Centerline staking has been placed and proposed trail alignment is under review between the old town maintenance building and Four Mile Creek. Please remember that this is a construction zone and is not yet open to the public.

N. Trade St. in Matthews will be closed from 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. beginning Sunday night, May 24 thru Thursday morning, May 27. Work will be done on the crosswalks, speed tables and pavement markings.

This is the final phase of the N. Trade Street improvements that have been underway this Spring. The closure will occur from the intersection of John St. to Matthews Station Street.

The Matthews Alive Board of Directors has announced their annual Call for Artists for what will become the official art piece for the Matthews Alive Festival in 2010. Milling and Paving of N. Trade Street is now underway. The work will be done at night to minimize impacts on traffic. Over 10,000 vehicles use N. Trade Street daily.

The roadway will be closed from the intersection of John Street to Matthews Mint Hill Road from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night this week. Paving is expected to completed by April 17.

Courtney Pruitt and Travis Ernsberger have completed the Fire Academy at Cleveland Community College where they earned Firefighter I and II certification. The academy involved residing at area fire stations for two months of extensive training. Pruitt and Ernsberger are volunteer firefighters with the Town of Matthews Fire & EMS Department.
