Property Taxes
Mecklenburg County handles all assessment, valuation, billing and collection of property taxes for the Town of Matthews. Property taxes are levied on land, buildings, motor vehicles, boats, trailers, and income-producing personal property. The amount of tax is based on the assessed value of the property and the tax rate.
Information on land, buildings, other real estate and motor vehicles registered in North Carolina is kept on computer records by the county tax office and automatically billed for property tax purposes. The Town, along with citizens, has access to this information through computer records at www.charmeck.org
Residents are required to report to the county tax office by Jan. 31 each year their taxable personal property (such as boats, business equipment, etc.) Motor vehicles need not be reported to the County for property tax purposes if already registered with the State. A resident of North Carolina who owns a motor vehicle here is required to register the vehicle with the NC Division of Motor Vehicles and to pay Town and County taxes on the vehicle.
Property tax bills for real estate and personal property are billed and mailed to all property owners in September each year. This bill includes Town of Matthews taxes and Mecklenburg County taxes. Property taxes must be paid by Jan. 5 to avoid penalties. Property tax bills for motor vehicles, along with the auto license fees, are billed and mailed three months after you register or renew your State vehicle registration.
There are four ways to pay your taxes:
