Fire & EMS

Matthews Fire & Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was founded in November 2008.  The department traces its roots to the Matthews Volunteer Fire Department, which was formed in 1953, and the Matthews Rescue and EMS, founded in 1991.

The Matthews Fire and EMS Department is a combination department consisting of a paid Chief, Deputy Chief, seven career (paid) Firefighter/EMT's, and over 40 volunteers. The career staff work Monday through Friday from 6 AM - 6 PM and supplement the volunteers. Nights and weekends are covered exclusively by volunteers.

The purpose of the department is to provide fire protection and emergency services to the residents of Matthews.  The department also responds to neighboring cities and towns when they need help as part of the county mutual aid agreement.

Matthews Fire & EMS responds to approximately 3,000 calls for service each year.  In addition to emergency response, the department also participates in numerous public relations events.  Such events include education/prevention at schools, CPR classes, birthday parties at the fire station, and apparatus displays at various businesses during safety days.

As a combination department, we are always looking for volunteers.  If you are interested in volunteering, please click here for an application.  (At this time, there are no career staff vacancies).
