Exploring is a program through the Boy Scouts of America giving both females and males a chance to explore different career paths. Matthews Fire & EMS sponsors Explorer Post 911 for teens between the ages of 14 to 18 to explore the fire and EMS service.
The Post meets the first Saturday of each month from 8 AM to noon and the third Thursday from 6-9 PM. All meetings are held at Station 1.
At each meeting, classes are conducted on various Fire & EMS topics. Explorers are taught subjects such as CPR, first aid, fire hose training, ladder evolutions and pump operation. At age 16, Explorers may begin taking classes through CPCC to become fully certified firefighters so that at the age of 18 they only have three additional classes to take.
Sixteen and 17-year-old Explorers are permitted to participate in ride-alongs on the Fire & EMS vehicles. They can do most activities under supervision. Exceptions are entering actively burning buildings, operating hydraulic tools, chainsaws and other power equipment. They are able to enter buildings to extinguish hotspots when self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is not required.
