Parks and Recreation

The Town Board of Commissioners established the Parks and Recreation Department in 1995. The department offers a wide variety of services, leisure programs, activities, and opportunities for individuals of all ages and abilities.

Community Center Information

Matthews Community Center opened in 1907 as the town's first public school. Over the decades, the classic brick schoolhouse was expanded to meet the demands of this growing community. When the aging building faced demolition in the 1990's, the Town of Matthews stepped in with a multi-million dollar restoration effort. Now a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmark, the Community Center Provides a vital link between Matthews’ picturesque past and dynamic future. More information.

Crews Road Recreation Center

Crews Road Recreation Center is the Town of Matthews first indoor recreation center. The Recreation Center is located at 1201 Crews Road (behind Matthews Police Station). More information.
Crews Rd. Rec. Center Open Gym Hours: (Subject to Town Programs; Call to Confirm)
   Monday – Friday: 3:00pm – 9:00pm (Monday & Thurs.—Basketball; Wednesday—Volleyball)
   Saturday: Family Open Gym 11:00am – 3:00pm
   Sunday: 1:00pm – 6:00pm

Baucom Park - 601 Sadie Drive

Baucom Park has a variety of playground equipment, an outdoor half basketball court, and a picnic shelter with tables and grills.

Stumptown Park - 120 South Trade Street (.9 acres)

This park is used for outdoor concerts, the Annual Tree Lighting, special events, school programs, and corporate picnics.

Squirrel Lake Park - 1631 Pleasant Plains (29 acres)

This park is located near the Ashley Creek subdivision. On its 29 acres is a lake, playground area, picnic tables, grills, trails, a large picnic shelter/pavilion and a parking lot. Youngsters enjoying play area

Matthews-Sardis Park - 9650 Sardis Road (2.8 acres)

Includes a playground, picnic tables, walking trail and a parking  area.

Windsor Park - 10140 Windsor Park Drive (5.24 acres)
This park, located behind the Windsor Square Shopping Center, includes a trail system with sixteen fitness  stations, a pedestrian bridge aross the creek, open play field, picnic tables, picnic shelter, playground, bocce court, and a parking area.

Individuals, organizations, and/or corporations that wish to use a park on a specific date and time for a special restrictive purpose, must reserve each facility. A Park Use Permit must be completed and the appropriate fees paid prior to the applicant receiving a Park Confirmation Letter. The Philosophy of the Department is that parks should be open and available to the general public on a daily basis. However, a corporation or business may reserve a park for a one-day special event.
