South Trade Street Map
April 8, 2008 We continue to be in the soil testing and planning stages of this project.
February 25, 2008 The borings were completed last month, and the report is expected next week. Preliminary indications are that the culvert itself is sitting on rock and is stable. There is consolidation of the fill caused by the drought, and some is “sloughing” off the upstream side. This is the cause of the settling in the road surface. A meeting with DOT will be scheduled about repairs. Also, the contract is in place to update surveying on that segment and locating major trees.
In October, 2007 the Board made the decision to proceed with the 4-lane concept with a concentration on the section from Chesney Glen to Weddington. Public Works Director Ralph Messera met with NCDOT on Monday, January 14, 2008 to review the plans, particularly as they related to the road widths along South Trade Street and the culvert over Four Mile Creek. DOT indicated that they would probably not approve four 10 foot lanes but they did indicate that if the center lanes were 11 feet, creating an 11 ft/ 10 ft. (outer lanes)/ 4 ft. (bike lanes) configuration in each direction, they could probably work with that. There was much discussion related to the culvert and what was feasible, but they need to wait for the geo-technical analysis report. This work, which will evaluate the strength and load capabilities of the culvert and methods for its expansion, was accomplished during the night of January 21.
