Suzanne Gulley,a native of Matthews, grew up on a small farm near McAlpine Creek which at the time was Route 4 Matthews. She is a graduate of East Mecklenburg High School where she met her future husband, Jim. After her high school graduation, she attended Gardner Webb University and the old Charlotte College.

The Gulleys, who married in Matthews Baptist Church have now been married for 49 years. They have two children and four grandchildren. Mrs. Gulley worked most of her adult life in the newspaper business, first as a reporter and later as editor/publisher and founder of “The Matthews Record.” newspaper. She enjoys writing as evidenced by the fact that she won numerous state awards for excellence in news reporting, features and photography. In 2000, Mrs. Gulley graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (cum laude) with a degree in political science. She has been a member of the Matthews Town Council for three terms. Her passions besides her family are the sportsplex project, the extension of McKee Road to John Street and creating a living history farm in one of the town parks.
