MATTHEWS, NC – Next week three trees along Matthews Mint Hill Road will be removed due to their decaying condition. The willow oak trees have contracted fungi called conchs which have caused severe internal decay of the trees. These fungi, along with the drought, the location of the trees, and the age of the trees, have caused the trees to die.“We hate to lose any of our trees but in this incidence we have to remove the trees before they fall on vehicles, buildings, or people in the area. The trees have simply become a hazard,” said Pat Meehan, Town of Matthews Landscape Manager. The Town will replace the willow oaks with new trees this winter.
