Matthews, NC – During a meeting of the Matthews Board of Commissioners on Monday evening, the Board voted (5-1) to approve an ordinance allowing the sale of alcoholic beverages before noon on Sundays. The ordinance went into effect immediately upon passage.

“We’ve received input from several retailers and restaurants in support of this expansion, and as always we want to do what we can to support our local businesses and help them be successful,” said Mayor Jim Taylor.

The North Carolina General Assembly approved legislation known as the “Brunch Bill” and enacted North Carolina General Statue 160A-205.3 earlier this year, which allows counties and towns to expand the time frame in which alcohol can be sold by businesses already approved to sell alcohol. This applies to both on-premise and off-premise ABC permits.

Police Chief Rob Hunter examined the proposed expansion and issued an opinion that the Police Department does not foresee public safety concerns regarding the passage of the proposed ordinance. The Matthews Economic Development Advisory Committee also recommended approval.
