Matthews, NC - The Town of Matthews today announced that Barton Contracting will be applying a pavement preservation product to the roads in the Millstone Ridge community beginning Wednesday October 18 through Tuesday October 24. Millstone Ridge residents have been notified, and Barton Contracting will send an additional notification to the residents affected a day before the work begins on their section of the road.

The Town of Matthews is continuing to use new pavement preservation techniques by applying a fog seal, called GSB-88, in the Millstone Ridge neighborhood. A fog seal is used on medium-aged roads to help fill in micro cracks and protect the road from the environment. It is expected to extend the life of the roadway 3 to 5 years. It is applied fairly quickly and should only pose a minor inconvenience to the residents of the neighborhood.

Note from Barton Contracting
: We will be closing one side of the road at a time which will require that there be no traffic in and out of driveways on that side of the road or parked vehicles on the roadside. Each side of the road will require approximately 4 hours to dry. Cul-de- sac residents will be asked to park on the nearest cross street. If you plan on leaving your residence during the time of the work being completed we kindly ask that you park on the opposite side of the road or make arrangements to park your vehicle elsewhere. Work will take place during the hours of 8:00am - 5:00pm unless otherwise notified. In the event of inclement weather we will resume work as soon as conditions are favorable. In the event that the work is not completed on these days due to variables outside of our control we will complete the area the following day.

More about the Pavement Preservation Program

Over the last several years, the Town of Matthews has been changing tactics on how the Town’s roadway system is maintained. The Town’s Public Works Department now places greater emphasis on keeping the roads in good condition rather than waiting until they are in very poor condition and then rebuilding them. This is a much more cost-effective use of taxpayer dollars.

Last year the Town put down a rejuvenator, called Reclamite in the Coachman Ridge and Sardis Mill neighborhoods. This rejuvenator replaces elements of pavement binder that have deteriorated during placement and over time due to ultraviolet rays from the sun, wet weather and other environmental exposure. Reclamite is very low cost, easily applied, and expected to add 3 to 5 years to the life of newer roads. The Town followed the Sardis Mill rejuvenator treatment with a high-density mineral bond, called HA5, to protect the road from further environmental damage.  HA5 is more expensive than the Reclamite, takes much longer to cure, but is expected to protect the roads on which it is applied for 5 to 7 additional years.
