Welcome:  The members of the Matthews Police Department welcome the opportunity to hear from you - what's going on in your neighborhood or business, and what we can do to make our community safer. About Us:  The Matthews Police Department is staffed by approximately 85 full and part-time employees. We are aided in our mission by more than 25 dedicated citizen volunteers. Generally serving in one of four service divisions - Administration, Criminal Investigations, Patrol, and Support Services - our staff is committed to providing the highest level of service possible to our citizens. While our employees' work shifts vary from 8 to 12 hours, many still volunteer to assist organizations like Safe Kids, our Police Explorer' Post and the Lunch Buddies Program at our local elementary schools. 

Our Commitment:  The shared Mission of our staff is simple, but focused - "The members of the Matthews Police Department strive to promote a safe community by preventing crimes and reducing the fear of crime by our citizens, while treating all individuals fairly and with respect. Our members will demonstrate knowledge, courage and integrity while building partnerships necessary to enhance the safety of our community."  We recognize, however, that our members alone cannot keep our community safe - this requires the support and assistance of all members of our community. Through our Neighborhood Watch and Business Safety programs, our Child Safety partners, and especially the dedicated members of our Citizens Volunteer Corp, our goal is to establish partnerships throughout our community. We challenge you to get involved!

Check Out Our New Mobile App!

Our new mobile app will enable you to notify us of things that are important to you and allows you to submit crime and / or traffic tips, either anonymously or by providing your contact information for a follow up.  From the app, you are afforded the opportunity to check our crime maps, see if you recognize suspects from some of our open cases, send us your location if you are lost and need police assistance and much, much more. This is a great tool for two communication within our community.

Car Seat Checking Station
**New Schedule**

Due to our new car seat checking station schedule, we will not be having our regular Wednesday checking station tomorrow, November 7, 2018.

We have offered this free service weekly for many years but due to the restructuring of some staffing needs, we will now be offering it every other Wednesday starting on November 14, 2018.

In addition to our every other Wednesday checking station, please see the attached flier for other locations in our area that also provide this free service.

Citizen Police Academy 
 
The Matthews Police Department is now accepting applications for the 2019 Citizen Academy Class.  This nine-week program will provide citizens with an insider’s look of over twenty different law enforcement related topics.  Citizens will have the opportunity to ask questions of the instructors, and guest speakers, as well as participate hands-on in certain topics.  All classes will be held at the Matthews Police Department every Thursday night from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm starting on January 10, 2019.  The only requirements are that you are 18 or older, live, work or attend school in the Matthews area, and pass a background check.

To print an application CLICK HERE. Once completed, these applications must be turned in to the Matthews Police Department by Friday, December 14, 2018.  The first 20 qualified applicants will be selected to participate.
