Planning & Development

***Please note***
Effective March 18, 2020

As the concern about the spread of COVID-19 continues to grow and recommendations continue to be issued by the CDC and the Mecklenburg County Health Department, the Town of Matthews Town Hall building will be closed to the public.  As personal interactions have been restricted, the Planning and Development staff are still working to assist with planning and development questions and concerns.  Staff can be reached by telephone or email.  We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

The Planning & Development Department handles inquiries on existing zoning, potential new development, regulations for signs, neighborhood nuisance property, whether a storage building can be added to a lot, how to divide and sell land, and many other issues.

This department assists elected officials, advisory committees, property owners, and interested citizens in envisioning the future of this community.

Planning & Development prepares background data on proposed zoning changes, looks at site plans to see that buildings and parking lots are properly placed and landscape plantings are adequate, verifies proposed signs meet standards, follows up on complaints about possible Town code violations, and writes information on land usage concerns for the public and elected officials.

The Mecklenburg County Land Use and Environmental Services Agency handles building permits, zoning permits and inspections. Contact the local office via telephone at (980) 314-3234.
