Town of Matthews
Field Services Division

What Do We Do: The Field Services Division is comprised of Patrol Officers who handle calls for service, traffic enforcement, K-9's, and Detectives who investigate serious felonies, along with crime scene investigations.

Patrol - functions as the department’s first responders - responding to the majority of the department’s 40,000+ calls per year. These officers are responsible for conducting preventative patrols throughout the community, responding to citizen calls for service, providing immediate investigation of crimes, assisting our EMS department on emergency medical calls, promoting traffic safety, and conducting traffic crash investigations.  This team of thirty-eight members serve in four Patrol Teams and provide community safety 24/7 and respond to more than 100 calls for service daily.

In addition to their daily duties the Patrol Division contributes to other specialized initiatives within the department. Patrol Officers operate as Bicycle Patrols Officers, Field Training Officers, State Certified Instructors, Child Passenger Safety Seat Technicians, Traffic Crash Reconstructionist and members of the Special Response Team (SRT).  Two Police K-9 units are also assigned to the Patrol Division.  Each K-9 unit is assigned to two patrol teams allowing their availability for both day and night shift teams. Members of the division also serve on a number of departmental and Town committees and participate in community service events.

Prevention Suggestion:
- Safety and security do not occur by accident, it takes a team effort.  Our department cannot be successful without the help of our citizens.  Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.  If something seems out of place or unnatural report it.  Criminals are opportunists, so secure your valuables.  Vigilance is our best tool in preventing crime and improving safety for all!

Criminal Investigations:  While all of our police officers are trained and prepared to investigate any criminal offense, the more intricate or time-consuming cases are assigned to the members of our Criminal Investigations Unit. Our detectives are responsible for the investigation of all felony  investigations, serious misdemeanor investigations, and pattern crimes investigations. These men and women work closely with our regional law enforcement partners to not only solve reported crimes but to identify and capture repeat offenders to prevent future crimes from occurring.

Our Staff: This team is comprised of ten sworn members: a captain, two sergeants, and seven detectives.  Five of the detectives are responsible for general investigations such as homicide, robbery, fraud, burglary, and many others.  One of these detectives also conducts all background investigations for newly hired employees. Two detectives and a sergeant are responsible for all vice and narcotics investigations.  These include gambling, prescription fraud, prostitution, and all illicit narcotics organizations; one of these detectives is currently assigned to the DEA for specific investigations of heroin cartel organizations.

Training & Partnerships: Our detectives are trained in numerous specialty areas including crime scene search (digital photography, latent print recovery, tool mark impression, and many more); computer forensics and digital evidence recovery; cellphone forensics & evidence recovery; physical and digital surveillance; interview and interrogation.  Detectives must continually seek new training to keep up with the fast changing technology that helps us investigate crimes.  Members of CID are also members of numerous investigative organizations in the Charlotte Metro area; these memberships provide opportunity to share criminal information to help solve crimes in Matthews. Several detectives also assist on local state & federal task forces.

We are fortunate to have some of the most seasoned officers in our region working as detectives for the Matthews community.
